In the Ranks The Great Australian Military Game
1893

In the Ranks, The Great Australian Military Game has historically and political significance in Australian history. Published before Australia had a unified defence force, each of the six Australian colonies had their own Colonial militia. Optimistically, the game sees a Australian military where players rise through the ranks to become a General. Game play is by roll of a dice or teetotum. Players move a playing piece around the outside of the gameboard 61 places, then they continue to move through an inner elaborate path of 80 spaces to become a General. Along the journey players pass through various military ranks, with setbacks or advances on certain squares. The first to become a General is the winner. The game was published around the time when there was growing voice for a unified Australian Army and was advertised in newspapers during March to May 1893 —user summary
