There is a compass included in the game which helped determine in which direction you get to move. Main Game (Game Board): To rescue a border crosser trapped in the central fortress, a player must visit two of the four corner fortresses to recruit troops. The scout may only take one troop card from each fortress. The minimum number of troops required to rescue a border crosser is 350. If a player does not obtain 350 troops from the two fortresses they visit, they must visit a third fortress. Once a player has 350 or more troops, they must return to the central fortress. They can do this by landing on a space directly adjacent to the central fortress. Extra Game Pony Express (Box): The goal of the game is to be the first to reach Fort Dodge from Fort Laramie. At the start of the game, the penalty cards are placed face down in the positions indicated on the game board. Each player takes turns moving their pieces according to the spins of the wheel. If a player lands on a red "TRAP" space, they draw a penalty card. If the card depicts a Native American, the player must return to the nearest relay station (blue square), where they are safe. If the card depicts cavalry, they are rescued and can continue their journey.
