Doc Pop's One-Dimensional Chess is a chess variant that puts a new spin on the classic game of chess. The board consists of 16 squares in one row. Each of the two players have a pawn, a knight, a bishop, a rook, a queen, and a king. The pieces have modified rules that allow them to move in one-dimension. For instance, knights can jump 2 or 3 tiles from where they started. Bishops travel along every other tile, ignoring any pieces on squares of a different color than the one they currently occupy. By breaking chess down into one single row, players may find themselves visualizing moves a little further in advance than they could in a normal game of chess. Doc Pop's One-Dimensional Chess started off as an experiment, but after years of testing and feedback, it's turned into a highly enjoyable strategy game worth checking out. —description from the designer
