大河滔滔(The Battle of Yu-Dong) is the 6th game of Kilovolt Design s mini-war series. Showcasing the battle of Yu-Dong, the first major offensive operation conducted by CCP forces in ZhongYuan (Central Plains) during the Chinese-civil War. In the period of June to July 1948, PLA HuaDong (Eastern China) Field Army, supported by the ZhongYuan (Central Plains) Field Army conducted a series of operations against the KMT forces in the area. While the initial objective was the destruction of the KMT 5th Corps, the commander of HuaDong Field Army, Su Yu(粟裕) determined that the situation is unfavorable for the initial plan: KMT forces has reacted and heavily reinforced the area. Su Yu changed the plan and made a surprise assault on the city of KaiFeng, defended by a single division and some independent units, the city would fall in 5 days, all 30000 defenders are killed or captured. In response to the loss of this important city, KMT forces are ordered to march towards KaiFeng and seek battle with PLA. In the following mobile battle, Su Yu would be able to destroy the 2 divisons under Qu ShouNian(区寿年), and surrounded Huang BaiTao(黄百韬) s group army. However, rapid offensive from the KMT 5th Corps and 18th Corps eventually forced PLA forces to withdraw from the area. While both sides claimed victory afterwards, PLA has attacked a numerically superior force and inflicted heavy casualties, also drawing off significant part of KMT s mobile reserves from other theaters. This mini game tries to use simple mechanics to simulate the difference between the 2 armies: PLA are agile and responsive, but still lacked the strength of KMT forces. The game is simple and can be played in 1-2 hours, as both side are mainly aiming at the destruction of the opponent s forces, the victory condition reflects this and tense mobile battles are a common sight.
