Roil is played in a series of hands. Each hand typically includes 4 or more turns. Players can play a set number of hands or to a pre-determined point value. Each turn of a hand, the player draws three cards and then may play as many cards to the table (to their "court") as they wish. Once a card is played to the table, it cannot be moved except by the action of a Shadow House or Fate card. At the end of their turn, a player may only have five cards in their held hand. The first Court that includes one card of each rank of the court -- a perfect court -- or to a predetermined value, wins the hand. The scores are recorded and another hand begins.
